Jobs You Can Land With A Sports Management Degree

Today, I'd like to discuss the jobs you can land with a sports management degree. Over the years, I've worked with many talented individuals who have leveraged their sports management degrees into fulfilling careers. A lot of sports fans want to work for their favorite team, but a degree in sports management opens up more opportunities than you might be aware of.

Here's a look at some potential paths you could take with your sports management degree.

Sports Marketing & Sales

This is my path; I can tell you firsthand that it's an exciting and rewarding field. With a sports management degree, you can work in the business side of sports developing sales and marketing strategies for sports teams, athletes, or sports-related products. You could find yourself managing sponsorship deals, as I did early in my career with the Detroit Red Wings, or running your own sports marketing firm, as I do now with Snag Business. Entry-level ticket sales roles are the best way to prove your worth to an organization, and they have the most openings.

Team Management

A sports management degree can also lead to a career in team management. This could involve working on the player side of a professional sports team, handling tasks such as tracking advanced performance stats, negotiating player contracts, handling public relations, and team logistics.

Coach / Athletic Director

If you have a passion for coaching athletes or want to be an athletic director, a sports management degree can set you up for success. Your degree can help build your professional network by leveraging the resources available at your school. You can coach as a Graduate Assistant, or intern with the school's athletic department as you complete your degree.

Sports Agent

If you want to work more closely with athletes, consider becoming a sports agent. In this role, you'd represent athletes' interests, negotiate contracts on their behalf, and help manage their public image. A sports management degree is beneficial to sports agents, but also be aware that most professionals look for agents that have law degrees as well.

Event Management

Major sporting events require a vast amount of planning and coordination. With a sports management degree, you could work on organizing and managing these events, ensuring everything runs smoothly from start to finish.

Facility Management / Operations

Whether community recreation centers or professional stadiums, sports facilities need skilled managers to oversee operations, maintenance, and scheduling.

Sports Information Director

If you have a knack for communication, you could work as a sports information director for a college or professional sports team. This role involves managing the team's public relations and communicating with the media.

Chief Marketing Officer

My current role as Chief Marketing Officer for a SaaS company involves leveraging my sports marketing background in a broader business context. This demonstrates that a sports management degree can provide a strong foundation for management and leadership roles in various sectors in addition to sports organizations.

Summary

A degree in sports management opens up a world of opportunities. It's a field that combines a passion for sports with the thrill of business, and the possibilities are as diverse as they are exciting. No matter what path you choose, remember that success comes from a combination of knowledge, experience, and passion. Good luck pursuing your dreams!
